The Olander Park Systems's Land Management Team Honored

The City of Sylvania conveyed a prestigious City Beautiful Award to the Land Management Team of The Olander Park System for its design, development, and construction of the JoAnne Gorman Rain Garden & Walkway at the Olander Park entry. Mr. Art Landseadel, City of Sylvania Forester & Special Projects Director, presented the award to the Land Management Crew on Wednesday, July 20, in the Callahan Administrative Office.

The City Beautiful Award is in conjunction with the United States Postal Service. Carriers in Sylvania’s 12 mail routes “nominate” area homeowners who do fabulous jobs at beautifying their front yards. Since so many Sylvanians consider Olander Park to be the community’s “front yard,” the City and Postal Service presented its first-ever Special City Beautiful Award to the Land Management Team for “improving Sylvania’s environment by establishing the JoAnne Gorman Rain Garden & Walkway.”

The concept and almost all work came from Sylvania School District alumni. Former park system assistant manager Ms. Lyndsey Jordan, Maplewood ’97 & McCord ‘00, and now a Contract

Negotiation Specialist for the United States Air Force, suggested a rain garden to eliminate two issues: the maintenance lot often flooded and froze in the Winter, and the first view visitors saw was a large mulch pile, garbage dumpsters, and refuse cans. A rain garden would solve the safety concern and beautify the primary entrance.

At this time, TOPS coincidently hired Ms. Casey Fuleky, Southview ‘10, who was exploring a Landscape Architect career, and assigned her the Gorman Garden. She would later be on the 2009 Southview Ohio Nursery & Landscape State Championship Team, then won the 2010 Individual Ohio Landscape Management Proficiency Title. In addition to the Gorman Garden, she did the new master plans for TOPS six parks, was LA Intern on the Downtown Sylvania River Trail, and is currently designing the Sylvan Prairie Park sledding hill complex.

Mr. Bryan Davis, Southview ‘07, joined TOPS in that year, returning each Summer as he completes his Master’s degree in Psychology from Ohio University in 2012. He led the installation crew since 2009, with his brick walkway adding an unintended but important aspect to the improvement – safely separating walkers and children from the busy main roadway.

Joining Lyndsey, Casey and Bryan in implementing the garden & walkway are current Land Management staff James Dunnett, Chad Eldridge, Stephanie Gang, Matthew Johnson, Adam Lewandowski, Cameron McLeod, James Niday, Jr., Katie Ransburg, and Ben Sheehan. Former Sylvania Seasonals who assisted in 2009 and 2010 include Elizabeth Ampthor, Jacob Eby, Trevor Fournier, Natasha Musser, and Elizabeth Strick.

JoAnne Gorman and her husband, Steve, were two of the park system’s most beloved volunteers before his passing in 2002, then hers in 2009. The Gorman Family dedicated contributions in JoAnne’s memory to TOPS and these tallied 80% of the garden & walkway’s initial $5,500 cost. Since its September

2009 opening, dozens of other families donated memorial benches, trees, and monuments. If you would like to add your own tribute, please contact TOPS maintenance manager Dave Woodcock at 419-882-8313 ext.27 or e-mail him.
