The Olander Park System
The Olander Park System provides Sylvania Township and the surrounding community with five parks and numerous public events and activities.
OUR PARKS
The Olander Park System (also known as TOPS) manages the following five parks. Click on a park’s name for its location, hours, activities and more.
1. Olander Park is best known for 28-acre Olander Lake where you can fish, rent paddle or row boats, swim at our supervised natural sand beach, and rent picnic shelters or our community hall.
2. Fossil Park allows kids of all ages to dig for the fossils of ancient ocean creatures in 375 million year old Devonian Era shale deposits.
4. Whetstone Park is a 3-acre neighborhood park with an ADA accessible playground.
5. Southview Oak Savanna is a 7-acre remnant of the rare Oak Openings Savanna plant community located along the University Parks Bike Trail.
TOPS
Winter Weather Policy
The
front lot for Sylvan Prairie Park and the Quarry Ridge Bike Trail at 8601 Brint
Road are open daily including holidays. TOPS closes the large back parking lot
until Spring, so if you wish to visit the Sylvan Prairie playground in the
Winter, park at the front lot and walk the Quarry Ridge Bike Trail south
roughly 300 yards.
Fossil
Park at 5705 Centennial Road will open throughout the Winter. Fossil hunting is
over as the temperatures freeze the piles, but the restroom and parking are
available for Quarry Ridge Bike Trail patrons from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
daily.
TOPS
endeavors to keep Olander, Sylvan Prairie, Fossil, and the Quarry Ridge Bike
Trail open in all weather. If a major winter storm occurs, however, and Lucas
County declares a Level 2 or Level 3 Snow Emergency, TOPS will close its
facilities until the County lifts its restriction and park system staff can
safely plow its sites. A Level 2 Snow Emergency states only vehicles that are
absolutely necessary should be on area roadways, and Level 3 stipulates no
vehicles other than for emergency services should be on the roads.
EVENTS
TOPS' major annual events include the Maple Sugaring Fest, Easter Egg Hunt, Kids Trout Derby, “Sunset Serenades” Concert Series, Super Kids & Sylvania Triathlons, Halloween Hike and numerous family and community programs and events that promote the area’s natural habitats and meet the physical activity needs or our constituents.
